10 games you forgot were once exclusive to Nintendo consoles

For a long time, Nintendo was the absolute king of console gaming. Even though it had competition from Sega, it wasn’t until Sony entered the ring with the PlayStation that Nintendo really asked someone to give them value for their money.

Most of the ten games and franchises below have moved from their Nintendo-exclusive playgrounds to either Sony or multi-platform. Several of them were also exclusive even after that time, not going to other consoles until years later or for some other reason. Even though Nintendo lost them as exclusives, the company still has household names like Mario and Zelda.

Final fantasy

Final Fantasy NES 1987

The first six main entries in this legendary JRPG franchise were released exclusively on NES and SNES. Only three of them went out to the west in their first races. The series moved to PlayStation for Final Fantasy 7 due to the increased space of the CD format allowing for a more ambitious project. Subsequently, classic titles made their way to the PlayStation and possibly other platforms. Luckily for Nintendo fans, there are plenty of post-Final Fantasy 6 games available on Nintendo Switch.

Resident Evil 4 / Resident Evil Remake / Resident Evil 0

Resident evil 4 regenerator

Capcom and Nintendo have reached an agreement to offer several games exclusively on GameCube. Three of them were Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 4 was released in 2005, and the PS2 version wasn’t released until nine months later. Resident Evil Remake and 0 didn’t come out on non-Nintendo systems until the HD re-release in 2015. While waiting that long has been tough, the power of the GameCube has helped the remake become one of the prettiest games ever. of the generation.

metal gear planting fee 1987

In Japan, the first Metal Gear was released on the MSX2 computer. A year later, in 1988, a port for the NES was brought to the west. This was the only place to play it in North America for two years until it came to several personal computers.

Unfortunately, this version differs greatly from Hideo Kojima’s original game in Japan. It wasn’t until 2006 with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence that Western gamers were able to experience the first title the way it was meant to be played.

Dragon Quest

Dragon Warrior IV NES

In the West, this series was originally known as the Dragon Warrior. It wasn’t until after Dragon Quest 7 that the series adopted a different name and moved from SNES to PlayStation. Dragon Quest 7 was released in 2000 in Japan and 2001 in the United States, releasing extremely late in the life of the console. It’s also one of the longest games for the console, easily reaching 100 hours.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles / Darkside Chronicles

Due to the difference of the Nintendo Wii, mainly due to the innovative controller, the developers took the opportunity to create many spin-offs taking advantage of the unique features of the console. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles are small arms game spin-offs spanning several older storylines and new stories. Released in 2007 and 2009, both games arrived on PS3 in 2012. While you can play with a standard Sixaxis or DualShock 3, you can also use a PlayStation Move controller for a more arcade-like experience.

Super Castlevania 4

Super Castlevania IV

While Castlevania isn’t exactly synonymous with Nintendo – several older titles have been released on Sega consoles as well – many of the franchise’s best titles have been released on NES and SNES. That changed with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

This 2D title was released on the original PlayStation and is often considered the best in the franchise. In 2019, Konami released Castlevania: Anniversary Collection, which brought many once-exclusive games to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

Mana Secret

The Mana series has differentiated itself from other RPGs by taking place primarily in real time. Like many Square properties, it made the jump to PlayStation. Secret of Mana finally got the remake treatment in 2018, which saw the light of day on PlayStation and Windows. Oddly enough, Collection of Mana, a compilation of the first three games in the franchise, is only available on Nintendo Switch. It would be nice to have these classics on a PlayStation system.

Wonderful 101

Like many Wii U exclusives, PlatinumGames’ Wonderful 101 didn’t get the attention or sales it deserved due to the console’s extremely low install base. Fortunately, the developer has self-released a re-release for modern consoles, which has also been released on PS4 and Xbox One. Even though the console takes advantage of the Wii U’s gamepad, it plays well with a more traditional controller. Hideki Kamiya, director of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil 2, also directed The Wonderful 101.

Contra 3: Alien wars

Against 3 extraterrestrial wars

The first two main Contra games hit arcades in addition to the home versions. Contra 3: The Alien Wars was exclusive to the SNES and other Nintendo platforms for many years until the release of Contra: Anniversary Collection in 2019. This collection includes Contra 3: The Alien Wars and was released on PS4 and Xbox One. It’s not too surprising to see this, as other Contra games have been released on Sega and PlayStation consoles.

Chrono Trigger is often considered one of the greatest RPGs of all time, on par with the best Final Fantasy games. For a few years it was only available on SNES, but it was released on the original PlayStation in 2001, packaged with Final Fantasy IV as the Final Fantasy Chronicles. This version does have some nasty technical issues, however. The best way to play is on the Nintendo DS, although the Windows version is decent these days after receiving a slew of updates.
