Fire Emblem Three Hopes Receives Significantly Low Sales and Reviews in Japan

Recently, Japanese outlet Game Memo published an article regarding the fan reception of the recently released game. Fire Emblem Three Hopesthe latest installment in Koei Tecmo’s Warriors series, which was released a month ago on June 24, 2022. Being a spin-off from Nintendo Fire Emblem Three Housesas well as a new Warriors game, you’d think it was the perfect game for fans who enjoyed Three Houses and Warriors games in general, right?

Well, it turns out that Three Hopes got some pretty harsh reviews from such fans in Japan. For example, if you go to the game’s Amazon Japan page, the first reviews you’ll find in the “Top Japan Reviews” section are negative stars. Without spoiling the game itself, most of the annoyances stem from one key fact: the story. Most, if not all, of the comments have some sort of disappointment with the character developments that occur, with one even going so far as to wish the screenwriter never touched a fire emblem game never again.

This does not mean that the game has only however obtained low scores. In fact, going to the game’s official Metacritic page still reveals a rather favorable score, and even our editor Jacob gave the game a 9 out of 10 during his review. Also, if you only consider Amazon Japan, 1-star reviews are only 10% of the total, but the fact that these negative reviews are shown first is quite concerning for potential buyers who might check the reviews before knocking. that. Cart button. Additionally, 10% of 1-star reviews are undeniably major.

Rumors are spreading that due to these negative reviews, sales of the game have been rather slow, with Famitsu reporting in their weekly sales report that as of July 17 only 127,817 copies of three hopes were sold in Japan, with only 97,538 copies sold in its launch week. The same Famitsu report also states that Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles Switch port, a re-release, has sold 140,547 copies to date for reference. It might not seem like much, but considering it’s a re-release, it’s definitely odd, though demon slayer released two weeks before three hopes.

And, just to add some additional information to weigh in, Touken Ranbu Warriors, a game released in Japan in February, and also a Warriors-style game developed by Koei Tecmo, did much better in its launch week in Japan, selling 113,159 copies. According to Game Memo, copies of three hopes can be found with relative ease, up to 30% off its original retail price of 7,920 yen on sites like Amazon. It’s truly rare for a recent title of this caliber from Nintendo to end up receiving such mixed reception.
