Xbox has traditionally never gained a foothold in Japan. A number of reasons have come together time and time again over the years to see the brand see less than stellar sales in the region and be vastly overtaken by Sony and Nintendo. In recent years, however, Microsoft has renewed its efforts to increase its market share in Japan, and the results have certainly been visible.
In fact, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have collectively already surpassed Xbox One lifetime sales. According to the most recent Japanese sales data released by Famitsu, total Xbox Series X/S sales are over 260,000 units. That’s well over double the Xbox One’s total lifetime sales of over 114,000 units.
It’s worth noting, of course, that the Xbox One was by far the worst-performing Xbox system in Japan, although given the fact that the Xbox Series consoles have only been out for less than two years, the fact that they have already more than doubled the sales of its predecessor in the region is impressive to say the least.
The last few weeks have also seen the PS5 being overtaken by the Xbox Series X/S in Japan, but to be fair, that’s due to Sony’s struggles with supply shortages. Even so, it’s abundantly clear that Xbox has gained noticeable momentum in the region.
