Nintendo held its annual Briefing on Corporate Management Policy event Although the September 16 conference was largely devoted to the company’s corporate philosophy and its ongoing plans for expanding its intellectual property, Nintendo shared some interesting tips during the briefing including the latest milestones for Nintendo Switch online accounts and subscribers.
According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, more than 200 million Nintendo Accounts have now been created worldwide. âWe have worked hard to expand our intellectual property beyond the dedicated video game platform business to reach customers who do not own any of our game systems. Accordingly, creating an account Nintendo for users has grown significantly, especially with the release of the Mario Cart Tour mobile app, âFurukawa said.
Furukawa noted that the number of Nintendo customers “is steadily increasing with the growing Nintendo Switch install base.” Accounts continue to be an integral part of Nintendo’s plans. âGoing forward, the Nintendo Account program will continue to provide an important basis for the distribution of our products and intellectual property,â said Furukawa.
Nintendo Switch Online, the company’s paid online service for the Switch, now has more than 26 million subscribers, up from 15 million subscribers in May this year. âAlong with hardware sales, the number of memberships has grown at a steady pace, with the implications of blockbuster games supporting online play,â Furukawa said. The most significant recent example is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which relaunched in March and was a huge success, selling over 22 million copies in June.
Another part of Nintendo Switch Online is its NES and SNES libraries, which Nintendo periodically expands with additional games. Another bundle arrives this week on September 23 and includes Donkey Kong Country 2, Mario’s Super Picross and more. Online Switch subscribers will be able to download and play Super Mario Brothers 35, the royal-style combat version of the NES Classic starting October 1.
