Nintendo sales panic: US NPD group results for October 2021 – News

Nintendo’s first month of U.S. sales for the Switch OLED kicked off what the company hopes will be another extended console winning streak, according to the NPD Group.

All data is based on dollars from October 3 to 30, unless otherwise noted. Nintendo does not present digital sales for the survey, although some third parties do present their eShop sales where applicable.

The Switch was the best-selling console in the country in October, both in terms of revenue and units, after the PlayStation 5 won in September. In an interview with the Washington Post (paywall possible), NoA chairman Doug Bowser confirmed that total sales over the four-week period were 711,000 for all versions of Switch combined, including 314,000 for the OLED. According to the same interview, overall sales were only 3% lower than in 2020 (which did not have the US $ 350 OLED model).

Nintendo’s two retail debuts in October reached the top 10 on the combined sales chart. Metroid Dread (October 8) was the third best-selling game of the month, behind Far Cry 6 cross-platform (Ubisoft) and Back 4 Blood (2K). The same WaPo interview confirmed Metroid Dread’s unit sales at 854,000 during the 23-day sales period, although it is not clear whether the figure Bowser cites includes online sales or just physical sales. of the game. We have contacted Nintendo for clarification. NPD has confirmed that Metroid Dread’s dollar sales are the highest in the series’ history, “nearly doubling” the month of Metroid Prime launch: note that Dread’s MSRP is $ 10 higher. The other debut album, Mario Party Superstars (October 29) ranked 8th despite only having two days of sales.

Other Nintendo titles in the top 20 include: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (11th), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (14th), Animal Crossing New Horizons (15th) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (20th). Third parties with Switch versions include FIFA 22 (6th), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (7th, only on Switch in cloud version), NBA 2k22 (10th), Minecraft (16th), Diablo II Resurrected (18th) and Mortal Kombat 11 (19th).
