Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 has surpassed Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S lifetime sales count, and it’s catching up with the PS5. This milestone makes Meta’s best VR headset the most successful virtual reality product to date, with a 97% increase in headset sales since 2021.
In a party tweetIDC Associate Vice President Francisco Jeronimo shares Oculus Quest 2 lifetime sales figures while highlighting its success. According to Jeronimo, the headset has “contributed to massive growth in virtual reality sales and consumer adoption”, with sales increasing by 242% in the first quarter of 2022, confirming this claim.
The Quest 2 undoubtedly dominates the VR scene, but it also proves to be a formidable contender within the gaming industry as a whole. The VR headset still has a long way to go before catching up with the Nintendo Switch, but Meta has already moved 3.4 million headsets more than the Xbox Series X and S consoles. The PS5 still ranks second with 17.2 millions in sales, but there’s a chance the social media giant will catch up with Sony.
It’s worth noting that component shortages and ongoing availability issues have affected sales since launch, so the Xbox Series and PS5 consoles could see an increase if supplies increase. That said, the Oculus Quest 2 continues to enjoy phenomenal commercial success, which speaks to the growth of virtual reality.

While the Quest 2 is Meta’s shining star, the Oculus Quest 3 and Project Cambria will likely steal the show once they arrive. The latter is supposed to be more of a metaverse tool than a pair of gaming glasses, but it could still give VR enthusiasts a premium gaming experience.
