YouTuber Vara Dark discussed the claim in his video, citing’s report of UK boxed sales charts for the week ending September 3. Sure enough, they reported “Saints Row saw its sales drop 80% from last week and fall to No. 6.” The previous week, it had been in the No. 1 position.

This means that the reboot was overtaken by games that were over 7 months old (Forbidden Horizon West), and even 5 years (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe). Although the genres and styles of these games are different from Saints Rowit’s worth noting that Nintendo’s popular racing game received more post-launch DLC support.

Saints Row has also been overtaken by new launches, including The Last of Us: Part 1, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collectionand Responsible for F1 2022.

It should be noted that, although Saints Row fell to 9th place in UK box sales the following week – ending September 10 – the game would have been the best-selling digital game of September 2022 in the UK. He only fell behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in physical sales. Saints Row also sold 21% more on Xbox platforms.

Vara highlights how the Saints Row social media account pushed back at fans of the original series hating how he looked in early trailers. They had dismissed censorship criticism and the main cast were unkind, with statements that they were proud of what they had done and would not change a thing.

The Last of Us: Part 1 would have sold half of the copies Saints Row did in its launch week. Vara notes that it’s not that abnormal. She explains that the former has also received backlash on social media – in part because it doesn’t offer refunds or replacements for damaged Firefly editions – and that the game is a remake as opposed to a brand new one. Game.

Even so, Vara finds the game dropping to 6th position in its second week, with an 80% drop in sales, to be terrible. However, the news did not surprise her.

At launch, the game was hated by both critics and independent reviewers; condemning it for its dated and mediocre story and characters, uninspired gameplay, and numerous bugs. Embracer Group, the parent company of publisher Deep Silver, saw its shares fall 7% as reviews came online. It was supposed to be the holding company’s first AAA release after numerous acquisitions this year.

Vara also reminded viewers that the game had been delayed for another six months for “additional polish”, although he said it “clearly needed more than a polish”. She proposes that those extra months were actually spent trying to fix the game to the best of their abilities, or under difficult working conditions, or that the delayed date was the maximum allowed by the publisher or superiors.

However, the YouTuber doesn’t fully forgive the developers, saying some had fumed online and lost all goodwill. “They were always developers going on social media basically saying ‘you’re -ists if you don’t like this game’, ‘you’re a terrible person if you don’t like this game and, you know what, don’t just buy it; we don’t like you.

After comparing it to other titles – Ring of Elden and Battlefield 2042 being top sellers for their respective months but with polar opposite receptions – Vara noted the game’s poor user scores on Metacritic across all platforms.

At the time of her video, she noted Saints Row had user scores of 1.5 (Xbox One), 2.2 (PlayStation 4), with other platforms rated as being between 2.3 and 2.6. At the time of writing, user scores range between 1.7 and 3.0, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 scores slightly higher since the date of Vara’s video.

Just like reviews and other reviews, user reviews also mock Saints Row for its story, characters, tone, gameplay, and bugs. Some also pointed to the game’s poor public relations when fans outright told the publisher and developer what they didn’t want and preferred the original games. Several had also sworn that developer Volition was “woke”.

“I feel exactly the same at this point,” Vara concludes, “I feel Saints Row is kind of dead, I don’t see Volition changing his ways in the future, I don’t see them going in the opposite direction.

“At this point they’re definitely committed to waking up, and unfortunately for them, it looks like they’re going bankrupt too, as their sales are plummeting, user reviews are awful, everyone is still laughing at this game on social networks, and I think it’s safe to say that this title is a failure for them.
